Did You Know?

Counting kicks is what you should do.
It’s important and easy too!

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that stillbirths occur every 22 minutes in the U.S.? Promise 1000 is partnering with Count the Kicks to educate expectant parents about the importance of tracking fetal movement daily in the third trimester. Research shows a change in baby’s normal movement pattern is sometimes the earliest or only indication that a baby is in distress and needs to be checked by a healthcare provider. Learn more: https://www.countthekicks.org/learnmore/save-7500-babies/

DID YOU KNOW? A disproportionate number of babies are born still to African American, Hispanic and Native
American women. According to the CDC, 1 in 96 pregnant Black women lose their baby to stillbirth in the U.S., and a Black woman is more than twice as likely to lose her baby to stillbirth than her White neighbor, colleague, or friend.

Help us end disparities in stillbirth by sharing the life-saving Count the Kicks campaign with every expectant parent you know!

Why Count the Kicks?

Why is it so important to Count the Kicks? Research shows if you start counting your baby’s kicks at 28 weeks, it could reduce the chance of stillbirth. When you have a daily kick counting session around the same time every day, you’ll get to know what’s normal for your baby so you can contact your provider if you notice a change.

How to Count Kicks 101

Here’s How: Starting at the 3rd trimester, begin counting.

1) Track your baby’s movements with the FREE Count the Kicks app or
download a paper chart at CountTheKicks.org.
2) Count kicks every day — preferably at the same time.
3) Time how long it takes your baby to get to 10 movements.
4) After a few days, you will begin to see an average length of time it
takes to get to 10.
5) Call your provider right away if you notice a change in strength of
movements or how long it takes your baby to get to 10 movements.

What's Normal?

Wondering what’s “normal” when it comes to your baby’s movement? Every baby is different, so knowing the average amount of time it takes your baby to get to 10 movements is essential. Pick a time to track your baby’s movement (kicks, jabs, pokes and rolls) every day, and you’ll soon begin to see a pattern so you can notify your provider immediately if there is a change in what’s normal for YOUR baby.

EXPECTANT PARENTS: When counting kicks, also pay attention to the strength of your baby’s movements. Call your healthcare provider right away if there is significant change in the strength of your baby's movements or how long it takes your baby to get to 10 movements. Trust your instincts, mama, and contact your provider right away!

Wild Surge. DID YOU KNOW? The latest research shows that a sudden, wild surge of movement is another indication to call your provider.

When do I Count Kicks?

Wondering when to count kicks? Starting at 28 weeks (or 26 weeks if you’re high risk or pregnant with multiples), count your baby’s movements every day, preferably at the same time. Pick a time based on when your baby is usually active and count those kicks, jabs, pokes and rolls! You’ll begin to see how long it takes your little kicker to get to 10!

PARENTS-TO-BE: SPEAK UP if you notice a change! Count
the Kicks encourages all expectant parents to listen to their gut
and to not stay silent if their babies' movements change.

MYTHS

Myth #1: Run out of Room

MYTH BUSTER: Babies do not slow down or “run out of room” at the end of pregnancy. While the types of movement may change (more jabs, fewer somersaults), babies should move up to and even during labor. If you notice a change in what is normal for your baby, contact your provider right away!

Myth#2: 10-in-2

MYTH BUSTER: You have probably heard the old adage 10-in-2 as it relates to fetal movement, but this recommendation is actually outdated.

Current research indicates moms should be focusing on understanding the normal amount of time each day it takes their baby to get to 10. Every baby is different, and by counting kicks daily in the third trimester, an expectant parent can get to know what’s normal for their baby — the average amount of time each day it takes to get to 10 movements — so she can alert a provider if there is a change.

BABY SAVES!

Get to know Count the Kicks Baby Save Emerson! Her mom Lindsey counted kicks every day using the FREE Count the Kicks app and contacted her provider and went in to get things checked.

"Our little lady moved so much, I would on most days count her kicks in under three minutes. Then one night after work I felt like she wasn’t moving her normal rate. It took 55 minutes to get five kicks. I started to get nervous, and called the nurse on call. She said to count again in an hour. Later that night I counted again, I got 10 kicks in 37 minutes but still knew this was not her ‘normal.’ We decided to ease our mind and go to the hospital and hear her heartbeat. Once at the hospital things took a turn, her heartbeat was strong, but not showing the reactive beats they wanted, after a 30-minute ultrasound and no movement from our little girl, the doctor scheduled a C-section. We are so thankful that we knew what was normal movements for her, and went in when things didn’t feel right. We are forever thankful for the positive outcome that came from that night."
Have you heard Baby Skyler's story? His mom, Taylor, learned about Count the Kicks in her childbirth education class, and was using the Count the Kicks app every day to track her baby’s movement. She was 35 weeks along when she noticed that he wasn’t moving as much and that it was taking longer
than normal to get his 10 kicks, so she contacted her provider and headed to the hospital.

“The doctors told me that I saved his life by coming in and getting checked out. We still do not know the exact reason as to why his movement decreased, but I will forever be thankful that I was informed about Count the Kicks because it saved his life and made me a mom.”
REMEMBER RUBY, whose amazing baby save story appeared on Good Morning America?!? She kicked, mom counted, and doctors brought her into this world safely!

"Count the Kicks deeply impacted our family by helping us safely deliver our baby girl Ruby. Had I not been counting the kicks and using the app, Ruby likely would not be with us today. We are so thankful and grateful for Count the Kicks and all who work so hard to help moms take care of their unborn babies. We can't wait to watch Ruby grow up and see all that she was made to do! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!"
